Aramaic Proverbs

Most of those proverbs are from the Mishnah and Talmud.

* “Ma da'alach sanei, lechavrach lo ta'aveid. [v'idach peirusha zil gmor]" Talmud, Tractate Shabat 31a.
o Translation: "What you don't like done to you don't do unto others. This is the entire Torah; [the rest is commentary. Go and learn]."

* איסטרא בלגניא קיש קיש קריא (Talmud, Baba Metzia 85b)
o Istra Ba'lagina, Kish Kish Karya
o Translation: A coin in an empty barrel, makes a lot of noise.
o Meaning: People with little substance talk a lot.

* על דאטפת אטפוך וסוף מטיפייך - יטופון (Mishnah Avot 2,7)
o 'Al d'ateft atfu'kh, v'sof m'tifaikh ytufun
o Translation: Because you have drowned others, you were drowned — and in the end, those who drowned you will be drowned.
o Meaning: Sins shall be punished, but people are not allowed to take the law into their own hands.

* מאגרא רמא לבירא עמיקתא (Talmud Tractate Chagiga 5b)
o Me'igara Rama Lebeyra Amiqta
o Translation: From a high rooftop to a deep pit.
o Meaning: Someone lost his greatness and got into a big trouble.

* לפום צערא - אגרא (Mishnah Avot 5,19)
o Lefum tsara agra
o Translation: According to the suffering is the reward.
o Meaning: Man will be rewarded according to his degree of sufferings.

* קריינא דאיגרתא איהו ליהוי פרונקא (Talmud, Baba Metzia 83b)
o Karyana deigarta ihu lihavei parvanka
o Translation: The one who reads the letter (of the king order)- he will be the messenger (to do what's writen in the letter)
o Meaning: The man that telling to do something- he might be the one to do it.

* או חברותא או מיתותא (Talmud Tractate Taanit 23a)
o O chavruta o mituta
o Translation: Or a friend- or death.

* "אסא דקאי ביני חילפי אסא שמיה ואסא קרו ליה" (Talmud Tractate Sanhedrin 44a)
o Asa dekai beyni chilfey- asa shmey veasa karu ley
o Translation: A myrtus(myrtle) standing between thistles- myrtus is its name and myrtus it is called
o Meaning: This statement is writen as a illustration for the statement "jewish, even sinful is still jewish". Rav Kook says in Musar Avicha 1,8 that the spirit of a jew is standing in its glamor even if sinned.

* "בהדי הוצי לקי כרבא" (Talmud Tractate Baba Kama 92a)
o Bahadei hutza lakey karva
o Translation: When a man trying to uproot a thistle sometimes uproots the cabbage with it.
o Meaning: If a man has bad neighbor he might be harmed.
