Bauernregeln Proverbs

Bauernregeln ("Farmer's Rules" or country proverbs) are rhyming couplets in German that summarize some bit of backcountry wisdom, often having to do with farming, farm animals, or the weather. An example of this type of proverb in English is, "Red sky at night, sailors delight".


* Sind die Hühner flach wie Teller,
war der Traktor sicher schneller.
o If the fowl are flat as plaster,
the tractor was a little faster.
o Lit.: "If the chickens are flat as plates, the tractor must have been faster than they were."
* Tote Hühner in den Ställen,
gibt's im Frühjahr Salmonellen!
o Chickens dead down in the cellar,
means in springtime--salmonella!
* Trinkt der Bauer und fährt Traktor,
wird er zum Gefahrenfaktor.
o When farmer drinks and drives his tractor,
he becomes a danger factor.

* Trinkt der Bauer zuviel Bier,
melkt der Trottel seinen Stier!
o Farmers who drink too much beer,
often try to milk a steer!

* Hat der Bauer kalte Hände,
flieht die Kuh raus ins Gelände.
o If the farmer has cold hands,
the milkcow bolts for foreign lands.

* Kommt der Regen schräg von Vorn,
kriegt die Kuh ein nasses Horn.
o When the rain comes slantwise in,
it means the cow gets a damp chin.
o Lit.: "If the rain comes in slantwise (ie, not straight from the front but at an angle), the cow will get a wet horn."

* Trägt der Bauer rote Socken,
wird das Wetter feucht oder trocken.
o A red stockinged farmer is a sure sign,
that it will either rain--or shine.

* Kräht der Hahn auf dem Mist
ändert das Wetter oder es bleibt wie es ist.
o When rooster crows from dungheap's top
Weather will soon change--or not.

* Wenn der Bauer auf dem Miststock kräht,
kommt der Psychiater meist zu späht.
o When farmer's seen crowing atop the manure
most often the shrink comes too late for a cure.

* Liegt mittags Weißes in den Suppen,
dann hat die Bäu'rin wieder Schuppen!
o When soup is covered with strange fluff,
the farmer's wife must have dandruff.

* Wenn es in die Suppe hagelt,
ist das Dach wohl schlecht genagelt!
o What mean hailstones in the soup?
You have a hole there in your roof.
o Lit.: "When it hails in the soup, the roof is probably nailed down quite poorly."

* Geht die Sonne auf im Westen,
lässt der Bauer seinen Kompass testen.
o The sun arises in the west,
means farmer's compass needs a test.

* Steht im Winter noch das Korn,
isses wohl vergessen wor'n.
o When in Winter stands the cotton,
it was prob'ly just forgotten.
o Lit.: "When the grain is still standing in winter, it was probably forgotten."

* Ist der Bauer völlig blank,
gehört sein Hof wohl bald der Bank.
o When the farmer's head's a blank,
his farm belongs soon to the bank.

* Es trinkt der Mensch, es säuft das Pferd,
in Bayern ist das umgekehrt!
o The man drinks, the horse slurps--
In Bavaria it's just reversed.

* Im Frühjahr weiß das Rindvieh längst:
Nicht jeder Ochse ist ein Hengst.
o Each spring learn cattle with a thud--
not every bull becomes a stud.

* Stopft der Bauer sein Gewehr,
meckert die Bäurin nimmermehr!
o When the farmer loads his gun,
his wife's complaining is soon done.

* Singt die Magd im Abendrot,
Jede Kuh mit Selbstmord droht.
o When the maid sings on the prairie,
every cow craves harikari.

* Läuft nackt herum der Bauernsohn,
ist zu tief die Subvention.
o When farmer joins nude clubs with ease,
it's caused by high farm subsidies. [No, mistranslation - this means just the opposite, farmer's son not having money for clothes due to low subsidies!]

* Sieht die Magd den Bauern nackt,
wird von Brechreiz sie gepackt.
o When the maid saw farmer nude,
she felt like throwing up her food.

* Fällt der Bauer tot vom Traktor,
steht in der Nähe ein Reaktor.
o If farmer falls dead off his tractor,
he must be near a nuclear reactor.
