Cypriot Proverbs

The Cypriot dialect is a Greek dialect that is spoken in the island of Cyprus. It is nearer to the Ancient Greek language than the Modern Greek language. The proverbs are written with Greek characters (letters).

* "Άλλα 'ν' τ' αμμάδκια του λαού τζι άλλα του κουκουφκιάου"
o Greek Translation: "Άλλα, (διαφορετικά) είναι τα μάτια του λαγού κι άλλα της κουκουβάγιας"
o English Translation: "The rabbit has different eyes from the owl's"

* "Άλλαξεν ο Μανωλιός τζι έβαλεν τα ρούχα του αλλοιώς"
o Greek Translation: "Άλλαξε ο Μανωλιός κι έβαλε τα ρούχα του αλλιώς"
o English Translation: "Manolios (name) changed - he put on his clothes differently"

* "Άμαν έν πάει ο Μωάμεθ είς το βουνό, πάει το βουνό εις τον Μωάμεθ."
o Greek Translation: "Όταν δεν πάει ο Μωάμεθ στο βουνό, πάει το βουνό στο Μωάμεθ."
o English Translation: "If Muhammad doesn't go to the mountain, then the mountain goes to Muhammad."

* "Απόν αππέξω του χορού ξέρει πολλά τραούθκια."
o Greek: "Όποιος έιν' έξω απ' το χορό ξέρει πολλά τραγούδια."
o English: "The one not dancing knows lots of songs."

* "Από σιει μούγια, μουγιάζεται."
o Greek: "Κάποιος προσπαθεί να διώξει την μύγα μόνο αν αυτή κάθεται επάνω του."
o English: "One swats the fly only if it annoys that person."
(Used for a person who while being criticized in a conversation, gets angry and tries to defend himself. The proverb shows that for the person to get so angry, the criticisms must have some validity, similar to "Methink the lady doth protest too much.")

* Δωστου πελλου αγγουρι να σου πει εν ζαβο.

* Δωκε θαρρος του χωρκατη να μπει με τες ποϊνες στο κρεβατι

* "Έλα παππού να σου δείξω τ'αμπέλια σου."
o English: "Come along grandpa', let me guide you through your vineyards." (This proverb has an ironic and arrogant tone and is used for younger people who question the experience and knowledge of their elders.)

* Μεγάλον βούκκον φάε, μεγάλον λόον μεν πεις
o Greek: Μεγάλη μπουκιά φάε, μεγάλη κουβέντα μην πεις
o Turkish: Buyuk lokma ye, buyuk laf soyleme
o English: Eat a big bite, but don't say a big statement

* "Ο γάρος ο οκνιάρης έν τζαι βαρυγομαρκάρης."
o Greek: "Ο γάιδαρος ο τεμπέλης πάντοτε βαρυφορτώνεται."
o English translation: "The lazy donkey always overloads himself."

* "Ρίβκε αβκά πας τον τοίχον."
o Greek: "Ρίχνε αυγά απάνω στον τοίχο."
o English: "Keep throwing eggs on the wall." (Used for those unsuccessfully trying to teach something to people who are indifferent to any advice)

* "Το λαμπρόν τζει που πέφτει κρούζει."
o Greek: "Η φωτιά καίει εκεί που χτυπά."
o Turkish: Ates dustugu yeri yakar"
o English translation: "Fire burns where it 'strikes'."
